Milton

MiltonMilton is located on the Tokomairiro River, near the centre of the Tokomairiro Plain. Originally, a town by the name of Fairfax was to be at the centre of the plains. But as the plains were developed they became the source of grain for nearby Dunedin city. A mill was built out on the plains near the railroad and a town sprung up around it. This ‘mill town’ became Milton and the planned town of Fairfax never developed.

The area became and remains a small, semi-rural community. Tokoitians enjoy a laid back lifestyle while still able to enjoy the facilities of nearby Milton and Dunedin. Industry is still flourishing in the 21st century. Farming plays an important role today with sheep, dairying, cattle and cropping thriving alongside extensive forestry plantings which provide the base for the silviculture, logging and sawmilling, and boat building industries.

Milton has a population of 1884, is situated 40 minutes from Dunedin on State Highway One and is only 20 minutes from Dunedin International Airport. Milton’s close proximity to Dunedin City means that it offers the best of both worlds: the type of spirit only found in a small community, within an easy commute to access the range of educational and professional opportunities found in the city.
